Today marks one year since Powers & Associates opened. At first, I didn't really think one year was something to celebrate. After all, I have been working in the legal field for over ten years and today was just another day. But after thinking about it, it's definitely worth pausing and reflecting for a minute. I have learned so much in the past year and done so many things I never thought I would. I did not grow up or go to law school thinking I would eventually open my own law firm. In fact, there was a time during law school that I was sure that I didn't want to open my own firm. But over time, it was just something that evolved for me.
I spent time in different law firms over the course of my career and saw things I did and didn't like. I knew how I wanted my practice to run and how I wanted to treat clients and employees. Eventually I learned that the only way to bring those ideas to life was to go into business for myself. So I took a risk. I left a well-paying job in a big firm to work for myself. And so far, it's been great!
Over the past year I have grown not only as a business owner, but as a person. I have been forced to come out of my shell a little bit - the spotlight is not my favorite place - and promote myself and my firm. In doing that, I have learned that most people are genuinely willing to help. I have received lots of advice from great lawyers. I am so thankful for the people who have helped me over the past year with everything from a space to work, tips on "what not to do", referring me a client or even just being a listening ear to talk things out with. (Not to mention I have amazing family and friends who have been extremely encouraging and supportive as I started the firm.) It really does take a village.
I have worked with individual clients for almost my entire career. I have always loved working one on one and helping clients solve their problems or put the pieces back together. I am a helper, I like taking care of others. Something I learned this past year is that you don't have to stay inside the box when helping a client. I enjoy going above & beyond to help those in need and it has been incredibly rewarding to do that for others. It is also an honor to have someone choose me as their lawyer. I'll never get over that.
I am looking forward to year two of Powers & Associates and the growth and learning that comes along with that. I am excited to have expanded my firm into the areas of family law & estate planning with fixedratelawyers.com. I hope that going forward I am lucky enough to continue making a difference for others. Here's to one year and counting!
Kelly Powers moved to Texas in 2006 and immediately began working at a personal injury law firm in Dallas. She decided on personal injury after being involved in a car accident in college. The way her attorneys handled her case and helped her through the process made a big impression on her. She remembered that feeling when it came time to choose a career.
In 2009, Kelly started working at one of the largest Personal Injury firms in Dallas serving as the lead paralegal to the founding partner. She held this position while attending law school at Texas A&M University School of Law. After passing the bar she was promoted to Managing Attorney of that firm and was in charge of their offices throughout Texas. Kelly led the firm through every aspect of its personal injury cases, from the initial client call all the way through trial preparation and litigation. Throughout her career she has trained with some of the most talented auto accident lawyers in Dallas.
Kelly is passionate about helping people, especially through times of distress and confusion. In her field, many cases can be life-changing events. She believes she can limit the negative impact of those events using the law. This is why Kelly opened Powers & Associates.
In addition to being passionate about helping others, Kelly believes everyone should wake up and want to come to work every day. That is the environment she strives to create at the CrashLawyers.com office. The culture of a law firm is important to Kelly. She believes it should be approachable, caring, fun, challenging, professional and knowledgeable.
In her free time Kelly enjoys traveling, reading, spending time with family, and her two dogs - Jasper & Allie.
